Sabres U11AA Win Gold!
This past weekend, the U11AA Sabres took part in the Toronto Leaside March Break Madness tournament, against some very stiff competition - and took home a gold medal!
On Friday, we put up a strong showing against the Toronto Leaside Wildcats, with a 5-3 loss. On Saturday, the girls showed up to show Etobicoke (W2-1) and Clarington (W3-2) what we're made of with two amazing come from behind wins. The five teams in the tournament were so tightly matched that our 4 points put us in first place on Saturday evening.
Sunday morning was our last round robin game against Peterborough, who came out strong and never let us back onto our feet - unfortunately handing us a 4-1 loss and clinching their own berth in the finals that afternoon - now it was a battle for second place. Luckily for us, Clarington handed Etobicoke a loss as well, and we were up for a rematch against the very strong Ice Kats!
Peterborough was all smiles heading into the gold medal game after our soft showing in the morning, but your U11AA Sabres rose to the challenge with heart and grit. They took a scoreless game all the way deep into the third period when Isla Nguyen #8 scored to take the lead! The battle was on, and with 53 seconds left, Peterborough pulled their goalie and buried the equalizer. Five minutes of 4on4 overtime followed, still scoreless - what a game!
The gold medal came down to a shootout. Evie Mowat #31 in net was a brick wall - the first shooter got by her, but she stopped the second and third. But your Sabres shooters were not to be challenged! All three of them, Jillian Deeley #87, Isla Nguyen #8, and Sophia Morrison #29 buried their shots to WIN GOLD!!!
