The Stoney Creek Sabres are making a serious case as one of the top development programs in women’s hockey—again.
At the 2025 PWHL Draft, three former Sabres players were selected by Minnesota, continuing a remarkable trend of Sabres talent reaching the professional level.
Selected were:
-
Kendall Cooper – 6th Overall
-
Vanessa Upson – 38th Overall
-
Brooke Becker – 46th Overall
All heading to the State of Hockey—and all sharing roots in a community program that continues to punch well above its weight.
Meet Minnesota’s Newest Sabres
Kendall Cooper, taken in the first round, is a steady, two-way defender who brings leadership, composure, and elite skating. Her development through Colgate and the national team circuit has made her one of the top young defenders in the country.
Just over 30 picks later, Minnesota added Vanessa Upson, an offensive weapon who lit up the NCAA with her speed and shot at Ohio State. Upson brings instant playmaking ability and a nose for the net.
Brooke Becker, selected shortly after, is a defensive anchor who impressed with her shutdown style and calm puck control under pressure. She rounds out a Minnesota draft class with heavy Sabres DNA—and a lot of upside.
A Sabres Legacy Across the PWHL
This isn’t the first time the Stoney Creek Sabres logo has paved the way to the pros. Several former players are already making waves across the Professional Women’s Hockey League:
From Olympic medalists to elite defenders and playmakers, the Sabres have built a proud tradition of developing athletes who thrive on the biggest stages.
